Telephone etiquette for holiday calling MORE THAN 1200 operators will be on duty throughout the province Christmas Day when more than one million long distance calls — both direct dialed d operator-handled — are expected. Although additional cir- cuits have also been added to handle the increased demand, delays are inevitable with such a large volume of calls, many of which must compete for long distance circuits from province to province. Therefore, callers are urg- ed to spread their calls out over the holiday period so as to have a better chance of getting through. To accom- modate these callers, addi- tional B.C. Tel operators will also be on duty Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Callers should also note that since both Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Sundays this year, the Sun- day discount rates will be ex- tended to include the follow- ing Mondays. As well as spreading their calis out over the holiday period, callers are urged to use direct distance dialing, which is both faster and cheaper, and to obtain numbers ahead of time to avoid last-minute Directory Assistance ‘shopping’. Direct distance dialing information is listed in the front pages of the telephone directory. NORTH VANCOUVER’S Kim Kirkpatrick won’t be home Christmas Day but she can help you get there. Kim — and her mother Rose — will be among the B.C. Tel operators offering Christmas Day heip. Customers in areas with direct dialing overseas facilities should also refer to their directories for instruc- tions and information on dis- coumt rate penods.
