Van's big election issue Dear Editor: lt has been suggested by some people that this year has no main election issue for West Vancouver’s alder- manic candidates to take up. However, if the views ex- pressed by many individual residents of Ambleside and representatives of the various community associations is anything to go by, then something really big has in- deed the majority worried. This is the future of Ambleside Park and adjoin- ing Ambleside village water- front lands. Over the years, a considerable sum of tax- payers’ money has been ex- pended to purchase privately owned waterfront properties, and to enhance the Ambleside Park facilities. At the present time, the Municipality has just agreed to purchase the thirteenth of Ambleside houses still in use, leaving nineteen remaining to be acquired under the 1975 acquisition policy. Further, over 26 acres of Ambleside Park has now been returned to the Squamish Indian Band. lt is quite possible that the Squamish Indian Band will wish to realise the true value of these lands by promoting some large building project, such as apartments and com- mercial developments. Ambleside by the Sea Water- front’ programme review 1983, discussion paper put out to the community associauions for comment, is very decidedly biased towards developments along Ambleside’s waterfront lands. The Ambleside Ratepayers Association takes issue on the trend by the elected govern- ments at all three levels. This seems to be a course to follow the expediency of foregoing some of the most exciting and beautiful of parklands in the lower mainland, and negating on achieving the full potential to provide more of this parkland for a growing North Shore community. This is in spite of the fact that these areas are amongst the most used of public lands in the municipality. A short term bonanza seems likely for the owners of these lands, and for developers with big ambi- uons: make no mistake about it, they know it! The candidates can and Allow no up-zoning of waterfront Dear Editor: As a property owner in Ambleside | object strongly to any up-zoning of water- front property between 17th and 18th on Argyle Ave. We do not need any more apts. on waterfront land. The re- Maining property owners should not reap huge profits with apartment development. This is the last natural beach front in West Van- couver. We should purchase this land for park use so that future generations will thank us for having had the foresight. It is more impor- tant than ever now that the cut-off lands at Ambleside have been returned to the Squamish [Indian Band. Make Lower Lonsdale the ‘focus’ Dear Editor: it’s election time again in the City of North Vancouver, and the council to be elected will face the challenge of guiding the redevelopment of the lower Lonsdale area. My late father, Derek, as Chair- It is a betrayal of past municipal policy if these pro- perties are allowed to up- zone their land for apartment use. I believe the municipality should buy the properties, when owners wish to sell at fair market value as now zon- ed, so that such properties VOTE FOR STRONG REPRESENTATION could be reserved for park use.
