Readers’ questions answered QUESTION: You've said that you often leave your main baggage at hotels while you take two or three day tours using a satchel. How safe is this procedure? ANSWER: [ve never had any problems. And, I don't always lock my bags, either! I never leave anything valuable inside, just clothing. Any jewellery, electric appliances or expen- sive purchases stay with me. Travelling with just a sat- chel gives you marvellous freedom, especially on trains and ferry boats. ['d recom- mend a light one that can be folded and carried in your suitcase when not in use. QUESTION: [m going to Australia to visit relatives for two months this winter. While I'm there, Id like to see as much of the country as I can but I can’t make any definite plans until I arrive in Australia because I don't want to interfere with anything my relatives have planned for me. Also, Id like to stop for a few days in Fiji on my way, either going or coming. Is this a good idea for a woman on her own? ANSWER: Your travel agent should be able to provide you with brochures on package tours available within Australia. Note carefully if any of these must be purchased outside the country to get a discount. If I were having a relative visit travel- by Barbara McCreadie me for two months, I'd be delighted if they made a few plans of their own and didn’t rely on me the whole time! Why not make a few ten- tative arrangements and write them? They'll soon tell you if they've done something like book holidays from work at the same time. Fiji is marvellous! Don't hesitate to stop there and don’t worry about beifig on your own. I did it on my way back from Australia and had a great time. Fiji would be my favorite winter sun vaca- tion - if it cost fess to get there. DEAR BARBARA: I recent- ly read a travel article that said “duty-free” shopping is often just as costly as buying in regular shops and sometimes more so. Can you comment on this? ANSWER: The article was right, with a few exceptions. Smokers are wise to use duty-free shops, especially when leaving Canada for overseas. Cigarette prices are horrendous in stores. Even travelling between European countries, where cigarette prices in the duty- free shops are higher than ours at home, buy. You'll still save. Liquor prices are mostly cheaper than what you'll find in the shops but here again, higher than what you may pay in Canada — especially for Scotch and A whale of a holiday HYACK may be getting a bigger pool, but members of his species daily ply the big- gest pool in the world.
