Onginated by Sylvio (Leo) Belair, of 1419 Rupert, the petition which began cir- culating last Tuesday had been signed by 89 people by Thursday. Belair blames the bikers for tearing out the front of a house on the same street and using it for bonfire at one of their street parties a few days before the house was to be demolished. He had the petition printed up because of anger over an incident last weekend in which he says he twice had to call the RCMP because beer bottles were being thrown at him. Addressed to the mayor and council, the pettion states that those who have signed it are “constantly harassed by gangs of motor- cyclists and their associates who are partying in this area up to seven days a week unul 2 a.m. and later with ex- cessively loud music.” The peution claims there is “imminent danger to both citizens and property as re- cent events include: e Physical threats made to both property owners and the tenants in the neighborhood (including children and pets): e@ Destruction and burning of a residence in this area; e Damage to street lights caused by gunshots; e Speeding and unsafe con- duct of bikes, cars and trucks on streets and lanes (on Rupert Street and Har- bour Avenue): e Throwing of beer bottles at people and buildings. In bold black letters the petition states: “We receive insufficient help from the police in these matters. There its only so much that the RCMP can do. Now we need your help as well to nd our neighborhood and the district of these undesirables before it is too late!” Inspector Paul Hendncks maintains the RCMP have given all reasonable help in the matter. He says no charges were laid in the house burning because the owner stated he did not wish to bring any.
