An It-day trial heard evidence from some 35 pro- secution witnesses last November and on December 16 23-year-old Cameron Whittaker was convicted of arson. On February | 1 Judge D.T. Wetmore sentenced Whittaker to six years’ im- prisonment. Fire chief Hallaway’s report shows that as well as accounting for by far the preatest value of property damage last year, arson was also the number one cause of fires in North Van City. Total fire loss for the municipality in 1982 amounted to $992,013 — the third highest in the history of the fire department. The only worse years were in 1973 and 1975 — both due to fires and explosions at Burrard Terminals. The largest single loss was the $200,000 fire at Sutherland School. Though it was among the worst of years for fire damage in North Van City, the actual number of fire calls was down. Total for the year was 568 — two less than in 1981 and 43 less than in 1980. Fire Chief Hallaway com- ments in his report: “This is a rewarding sign, especially when one considers that 85 of the fire calls in 1982 were attributed to arson. Once again the fire department was kept busy with many emergencies other than fires. “Our rescue and safety vehicle continued to be one of the busiest trucks in the station,” Hallaway reports, “responding to 536 calls for the year. “This vehicle is complete- ly equipped with the capabilities to perform auto extrication work, medical emergencies and a host of other rescue operations. “The men who man the vehicle are highly trained, extremely dedicate and have a tremendous pride in the role they play in offering a rescue and safety service to the community.” The department was again plagued by false alarms dur- ing the year — 253 in total.
