OPEN LETTER TO
W.VAN COUNCIL

This is yet another letter
to endorse the sentiments of
so many of our Dundarave
residents with regard to
council’s outrageous
decision to totally ignore the
expressed wishes of the
majority supporting the
Sagers’ proposal to open a
neighbourhood pub. Even
more incredible is your latest
decision to spend taxpayers’
money on yet another survey
when it is very evident there
is Strong support for such a
facility in the Dundarave

area.

Why. one wonders, is
there seemingly such an
obvious and determined

effort by council to deprive
us of a much desired social

and convival atmosphere
such a venture would
provide? Even more per-

plexing is the rationale for
objection when in the im-
mediate vicinity of the
proposed pub there are no
less than four licensed
restaurants; two almost
immediately opposite
Sagers, where during
evenings or lunch-times,
when incidentally school
children are abroad, one can
partake of egg rolls or a
sandwich and consume as
much alcohol as one desires?
Why then is it considered a
potential hazard to enjoy a
glass of wine or beer and
some light refreshment on
the other side of the street?
Do these establishments
necessitate additional police
patrols and are the chentele
considered potential
disturbers of the peace”

Better ways than burning

Dear Editor:

The recent decision by
North Vancouver District to
once again allow backyard
burning, points out the need
for a wholistic approach to
various problems, in this
case those of waste disposal
and public health. The
smoke and fallout from bon-
fires are not just a nuisance
to the people wanting to
have their windows open or
hang out their washing but
they can cause considerable
discomfort and difficulty to
those suffering from asthma
and allergies.

Rather than individual

burning or adding any more
unnecessary material] to the
Premier Street dump, let us
think of an alternative or a
number of alternatives. A
landfill site purely for garden
refuse? Shredding and
composting on a municipal
scale? On a neighbourhood
scale? Shredding to produce
“bark” mulch? Or to add
nutrients to highway scars

and embankments? There
must be numerous. other
possibilities.

Incineration of garbage is
not the golden panacea that
many are hoping for. There

are serious problems, not
just mechanical and
financial ones, but health
ones as well, due to their
harmful emissions. We have
been lazy and profligate for
too long. We have to think
through the consequences of
our actions and inactions.
We must make the effort to
keep out, and find new uses
for, the bulk of what we,
presently, muddle _ all
together and throw out as
garbage.

municipal politics from the
low level into which it has

of person is Dan Rutley of D.
