30 - North Shore News — Sunday, Novemier 26, 2000 NV man leads emergency group LARRY Pearce of North Vancouver has been re- elected president of the Emergency Social Services Association of British Columbia (ESSA) for a two-year term. Pearce and three other ESSA directors were chosen from the 13-person executive to fll specific roles at the orga- nization’s board meeting Nov. 38. ESSA is a non-profit organi- zation that was established in 1988 to provide support to Emergency Social Services (ESS) volunteers in the prepa- ration of their social services plans for response in the event of a disaster in their communi- tes. There are close to 100 British Columbia cities, towns and villages that belong to the organization. ESSA directors and its three staff members work closely with the praviacial gavern- ment’s Emergency Social Services Program Office in Victoria in assisting some 5,500 active ESS volunteers in the Province. ESSA has nine strategically. placed regional representatives helping ESS volunteers in the provincial emergency. pro- gram’s six regions. The assacia- tion also distributes a quarterly newsletter, hosts information- sharing regional meetings and seminars, administers a volun- teer recognition program, and represents the interests of its members at various levels of government. Pearce is an experienced emergency manager. He was employed by Emergency Preparedness Canada from 19) through 1995. From 1990 to his retirement in 1995, he was the regional director for EP Canada for B.C. and the Yukon. He recently served on the organizing committee of the 5th Asia Pacific Conference on Disaster Medicine and Emergency Management, which was neld in Vancouver in late September. He and his wife Laurie, who has also been returned as treasurer for ESSA, operate a consulting company specializing in emepgency plan- ning called Pearces“. Don Puilen, also a resident of North Vancouver, has been re-elected as vice-president of ESSA for the coming year. He was recently honored by the North and West Vancouver Eniergency Program with a 10- year service pin in recognition of his longstanding contribu- tion to ESS on the North Shore. Doreen Myers of Surrey, who served as ESSA’s half-time executive director for seven years uatil the summer of 1998, was chosen to be the association’s new secretary.
