B4 - Sunday, June 24, 1984 - North Shore News Don't ignore your brakes SOME PEOPLE take their brakes for granted; that is until they fail. It is then that the folly of their carelessness is rudely thrust at them with all the force of an onrushing collision. The confidence of knowing your brakes will stop you safely in the shortest possible distance, every time, can only each wheel. There are disc brakes on the front wheels of most domestic models and drum brakes on the rear. As a safety feature, the front and rear brakes of most late model cars work in- dependently so that, if one system fails, the other can stop your Car. When you push on your come from having your car’s brake pedal, pressure is braking system serviced generated in the master regularly. cylinder and brake lines, HOW THEY WORK The system is comprised of a brake pedal, a master cylinder with a reservoir for brake fluid, brake lines and another smaller cylinder for pk which, in the case of front disc brakes, forces friction pads against discs, which are attached to and turn with the wheel. In the case of rear drum brakes, the brake fluid eter AUTOMOTIVE LTD. 988-7671 988-7671 SPRING TUNE UP ONLY °51” Inc. parts labour and tax Inc. points, cond., plugs, air filter, oil filter & engine oil, adjust carb. to specification. The more pressure you apply to the brake pedal, the more the friction in the front and rear brakes slow your vehicie. Some owners of vehicles equipped with power brakes believe they can stop faster than those whose cars aren’t equipped with power brakes. That’s not so. While power brakes make it easier to depress the brake pedal, they don’t improve your braking system’s stopping perfor- mance. They only lessen the effort needed to apply the brakes. Unlike the primary system, which operates chiefly by hydraulics, the parking brake is connected to the rear wheels of your car by steel cables. When you apply the brake, these steel cables ughten up, causing your vehi- cle’s rear brakes to be applied mechanically. There is usually ample war- ning that your. braking system is in need of service. A squeaking brake, for exam- ple, is a sure sign that your brakes need attention. Many cars have built-in wear in- dicators that make a high pit- ched squealing sound when new brake linings are needed. If your brake pedal becomes spongy and you have to depress it further than normal before your car begins to slow, it is unsafe to drive your vehicle and time to have your technician take a look. Resist _the-temptation to open the master cylinder yourself. You may in- advertently damage the wire bail or gasket that keeps the cylinder properly sealed. This seal is important because dirt can spell disaster to a brake system. Nevertheless, any loss of id may mean you have a leak in the hydraulic system A good technician will routinely check for leaks whenever he_ services your braking system _ Three NOR’ f 4,1 Clean cytitert Mic Hoy baller three corily Seater atid Sure way too thrcvcocgghtly oo lear yous Catt, CO coy berry Dla PobuassPirerg ow th wallet wel meety fF ettrierve ocala AIR CONDITIONER CHECK-UP nad, service Check of commoner ih oa foe tion of fhe entice freon! yYiual ee hte metagatertes ' NEWS photo Terry Peters FROM this angle, Lonsdale looks a bit like a roller coaster ride, the ripples are all streets that intersect the steep incline of lower Lonsdale.
