Dear Editor: Re: Lions Gate Bridge Rehabilitation I would like to respond to the recent inquiries regarding the Lions Gate Bridge rehabili- tation. Bridge closures have been significantly reduced from the 150 full closures proposed by the province to Iess than 40 closures, : To accomplish this reduc- tion in closures, the contractor (American Bridge /Surespan) will utilize a heavy-duty, tem- porary steel bridge section to cross over the short working area. This will permit all three lanes of waffic to continue to use the bridge, even while con- struction is under way. The 77-metre (253-foot) temporary steel bridge will be secured to the existing bridge deck and supported by the existing hangers. Traftic vill travel Approxi- mately 0.8 metres (2.6 feet) above the existing, bridge deck. The temporary bridge will be designed and constructed to the stasidards for permanent brid es, taking into account traffic, i impact and con- struction luads. The temporery bridge will be an integral part of the Lions Gate Bridge rehabilitation and will ensure the bridge remains safe for the travelling public. The contractor will also use the temporary bridge to facili- tate the removal of 10 or 20- metre (66-foot) sections of the old bridge deck. The old deck sections, underneath the tem- porary bridge section, will be lowered to a plattorm or barge below the bridge and a com- pletely new section will be lift- ed and bolted in its place. This construction method will reduce the number of clo- sures and increase worker sale- ty, as the majority of complex work will be performed i in day- light. Night-time bridge clo- sures will be required tor final deck welding. In addition to their erection engincering plans, the contrac- tor is currently preparing traffic and communications manage- ment plans. Once the detailed engincer- ing is completed, fabrication of new bridge deck sections will begin. Deck section replace- ment is anticipated to begin in January 2000. 4 Ds. Geoff Freer Project Director Lions Gate Project Dear Editor: The current trattic snarl on the Nerth Shore is a total dis- grace. The coordinating auchori- tics organizing road North Shore construction need to go back ro schoo} to refresh their memories about project man- agement. To restrict trafic on all major roads and intersections during the peak holiday sea- son and school holidays simultaneously is inexcusable, showing total disregard for the general public. Capilano bridge construc- tion on the Upper Levels is a mess in both directions and so are several other focations on the North Shore. have to go back and forth several times a day benveen West and North Vancouver to look after my construction business. I have to make a daily route map to find my way through this construction maze. If T would have any say or input to improve this situa- tion, the construction would take place with one project at a time channelling traffic through alternate routes, before or after the summer holiday season and school holidays.
