According to race director Hugh Wilson, this year’s race attracted the highest number of participants ever. The Bay Challenge race was sunk for a few decades, until a new breed of open water swimmers revived it in the 1980s. Likewise, the tro- phy itself disappeared for many years. When the Bay Challenge started up again last decade Percy Norman’s widow saw a news report about the race and remembered the Arthur P. Dawe trophy packed away in her attic.
