16 - Friday, March 27, 1998 ~ North Shore News North Shore youth collect awards Duke of Edinburgh’s Award recognizes achievements SEVERAL young North Shore residents are recipients of Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Certificates of Achievement. Eighty-three young resi- dents of the Lower Mainland have been invited to the Bonsor Recreation Complex in Burnaby, on Saturday, March 28. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a challenge to all young people between the ages of 14 and 25 to partici- pate in four arcas of activity: volunteer service; expeditions; skills and fitness. There are three awards to be earned — bronze, tor those over the age of 14; silver, for those over [5 and gold, tor those over 16. The award itself consists of a lapel pin or brooch of the appropriate metal and an inscribed certificate oof achievement. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is an- international youth program. In Canada more than 12,009 young Canadians are now participating in the award program either — through schools, organized vouth groups, such as Guiding, Scouting, Cadets, and on an individual basis.
