Following sold out productions in London and Vancouver last year, the Modern Baroque Opera Company has chosen the 1754 opera-serenade to kick off its new season. The company, formed in England in 1995, specializes in the revival of rarely-performed, small-scale 18th century works that deserve a wider audience. Gluck’s pre-reform chamber work is a perfect match for the space, according to Riendeau. “It’s a small piece intended for the enjoyment of a small, intimate audience.” Riendeau sings the role of Lisinga, one of a trio of “courtly ladies” who entertain Silango, a gentleman they come across ina fantasyland, The other performers in Le Cinest are Mezzo-soprano Céleste Riendeau sings the role of Lisinga in Gluck’s Le Cinesi. prise is in store for the audience. Le Cinesi is scheduled to run from Oct. 28 to Nov. 8 at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, 1895 Venables St., Vancouver. The recitative will be sung in English with the arias in the original ftalian. In June 1998 the company plans to present the North American premiere of Handel’s Seipione with the Cultch com- pletely transformed into an 18th-century theatre.
