Thirty First Nations from B.C. and Washington State were represented on the journey. The screening is hosted by the Heiltsuk Nation of Bella Bella, which hosted the cultural gathering in July 1993, attended by $,000 First Nations people. Cranmer, who hails from Alert Bay, calls Qatuwas 7a remarkable * journey of strength, spirit, and cultural revitalization among, north- west coastal native communities. “In the beginning, they (the paddlers and other participants} didn’t know the i impact it would have. Now in ‘97, many say it has changed their lives.” Squamish Nation member tan Campbell, one of 14 to paddle a canoe from Ambleside Beach to the north.rn coastal community, says the experience made him more appreciative of his responsibil- ity of learning the culture of his people. “The culture of sharing really brought the tribes together,” he says. At 20, Campbell was the youngest of his crew and the only one to fluently speak the Squamish language. Today he shares his knowledge with First Nations youth as a support worker with the Vancouver Schoo! Board. “The canoe has been a way of bringing the communities together, a way of empowering people,” says Cranmer. The film celebrates the healing power of tradition.
