Woman injured in fire By lan Noble News Reporter A sprinkler system kept damages down by snuffing out a mattress fire in a highrise home for the elderly New Year’s Eve. ' The fire, at the Kiwanis tower at 170 West 2nd, is one ‘of two recent fires still under inves- ‘tigation. North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Lieutenant. Dave Merrill said the fire depart- ment is still trying to piece together what hap- pened at the Kiwanis tower, but said smoker’s materials such as a lighter, matches or a ciga- rette appear to have caused the blaze. . A woman who was in the room where the fire started is in hospital with first degree burns and minor smoke inhalation. A fire investigator visited the elderly woman in hospital, but Menill said the woman is difficult to under- stand. Merril said the sprinkler system limited Tavconmoniy damage from the sixth-storey afternoon fire to a wall and the mattress. But water damage from the sprinkler system affected the first six fleors of the 12-storey building, he said. “No one dies from sprinkler water dam- age,” said Merrill. “Elderly people die often from smoke inhalation.” The day before the Dec. 31 fire and a block to the west, a suspicious two-car fire caused approximately $30,000 to $35,000 damage at a 12-suite strata complex. When the fire department arrived at the site of the 11:30 re, a Ford Taurus wagon and a Jeep pic a ‘were in flames, said Merrill. Smoke from the fire climbed out of the entrance to the underground parking lor, up the walls and into some suites, causing smoke damage. Merrill said car fires are ugly because of the plastics and polyurethane used in cars. “When it gets going, it’s thick, black and really smells bad,” ” Be said. The RCMP are investigating the fire, which Merrill called suspicious in origin. TUNE-UP SPECIALISTS = B.C.A.A.-A.R.A. - APPROVED [ AirCare - Gov.
