CRIME JS big business. Bocks, filrns, television, col-
lector cards depicting serial killers, murderers with
million-dollar book deals — ail attest to our lurid fas-
cination with the darker side of society. Imagine a
movie without a realistic murder; TV without police
and homicide programs; “true life’ TV movies with-

out incest, rape or child abduction. The media aren’t

wholly to blame: they are feeding our appetitie for
facts, details — and we grow hungrier for things that
shock us. Crime in our own lives robs us of more than
our possessions, It takes away our sense of personal
safety, our sense of community. Our homes have sen-
sors, are alarmed, are monitored. We carry pepper
spray. We don’t walk alone. Our children only play in
the back yard. We’ve gone far enough. Something has
to change.
