DOES THE word sappy ring
a bell? Too many moviegoers
watching Boys on the Side, a
tear jerker based on the
premise that relationships
between women are stronger
and last longer than those
with men, it did.

The title gives you a clue.
Women are definitely the main
course — the boys are served up
like dishes on the side.

Jane, played by Whoopi
Goldberg, is a struggling musician
looking to relocate to California
from New York. Through a ride-
share ad in the newspaper, she .
hooks up with Robin (Mary Louise
Parker), whose motives for leaving
the'city are unclear. After an
uneventful start to their journey,
they join forces with Holly (Drew
Barrymore), a naive. dumb blonde
who hus run out on her dope
dealin’, mistreatin’ boyfriend.

; The movie started slowly, and
from what I could see, was not

’ gathering much audience interest.
However, the pace picked up as we
learned more about these variant
main characters and what motivat-

The lead characters are strong
women who either know — or ure
trying to figure out —- where they
want their lives to go. Although
there’s very little visible friction
between the female threesome,
there is a potential for mishap on
the interpersonal relations level.
This makes you believe that it
could just as easily be you and two
of your girlfriends on that cross-
country trip; you have nothing in
common but you understand and
care for them nonetheless.

Boys on the Side tries to deal
with importaut issues of the
nineties, such as AIDS, sexuality,
violence, drugs, pregnancy, racism,
family problems, physical and
emotional abuse, friendship, and of
course, love. This movie attacks

‘them all without concentrating on

one particular issue, leaving the
audience dizzy, but really none the
wiser.

Director Herbert Ross does little
more than an adequate job. At one

was watching an updated version of

Thelma and Louise, Wt was as :
though Ross sat down, dissected

- several different movies, pasted
them together and called his cre-
ation Boys on the Side.

All three principal actresses
made the best of their parts, with
Drew Barrymore adding a new
dimension to her typical bad girl
tole. While Goldberg's acting was
credible, her singing has got to go.

Of the five of us who went to
see the movie, three enjoyed it and
two of us could take it or leave it. I
do not recommend this movie to
those who love action-packed
thrillers, or even a good comedy.
However, if you have an open mind
and plenty of tissues, on a slow
night this could be the movie for
you.
