20 - Friday, Nov. 27, 1992 —- North Shore News ENVIRONMENT GVRD green kit targets business sector initiatives YOU’VE DITCHED disposables. You’re com- mitted to composting. You’re rampantly recycling. Once you've become an avid environmentalist on the home front, it becomes doubly irritating to witness the huge bags of gar- bage being trucked away from local businesses or institutions. For some people, the amount of garbage produced by the “IC and I’ sector — Industrial, Commer- cial and Institutional — discourages them from taking ac- tion to cut down on their own waste; what, after all, can one person do in the face of all that junk from businesses? Of course, individual residents can and should clean up their own back yard: we do, after all, pro- duce almost 40% of the two mil- lion tonnes of waste discarded in the GVRD annually. «(For those now scrinching up their brows and reaching for their calculators, two million tonnes is roughly equivalent to two B.C. Piace Stadiums overflowing with garbage.) . But if we are to meet the 50% waste reduction goal mandated by the province by the year 2000, all of us, including the IC and I sec- tor, are going to have to take some pretty decisive action. House holders have been helped by the implementation of blue box recycling programs, which remove approximately 15% of the materi- al from the residential waste stream. We are also being con- tinually educated on composting, how to reduce our use of packag- ing, end the evils of disposables. Now the Greater Vancouver Regional District is turning its at- tention to the IC and I sector, having been given responsibility for the implementation of waste reduction in this area by Bill 29 (the Waste Management Amend- ment Act), which was passed. by the provincial legislature this year. ee Wwe >. a SER Se a lag ES y + WE MAKE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING EASY) Peggy Trendell-Whittaker ECO INFO To that end, the GVRD has published an IC and I waste reduction kit called ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: It’s Your Business!”’ It’s free, and full of information to anyone wanting to Start or further ‘‘green’’ initiatives in their company. Included in the package are a guide listing places io buy recycled office products, information on doing a waste assessement that will show you how much, and what kind, of garbage your com- pany is currently creating, “‘sreen’’ reminders to post at dif- ferent work stations, tips on reducing, reusing and recycling, and advice on how to find mar- kets for your waste material. Finding a collector for your waste is often the most difficult step in the proceedings. To help, the GVRD has published an In- dustrial Recycling and Disposal Directory, which they keep con- ‘ tinually updated on a data base. If you phone them at 436-6802, they will send you a list of ap- plicable services. Category headings are varied, ranging from oil, plastics and rubber, and card- board, to building materials, haz- ardous waste, and paper products, Using this service, you may be able to find a company that can teuse your industrial left-overs, See Decisive page 22 Our Green Planet Recipes for a cleaner, healthier — Water Saving Tip C= D It aS hard to wmagine that nearly one half of the water that we use dally 15 flushed down the to:let.
