Van Dusen ready for Wild Side’ sale

THE GROWING event of the
season draws thousands to Van-
Dusen Botanical Garden’s 14th
annual Plants on the Wild Side
plant sale, April 28, 10 a.m. to 4
p.m,

With thousands of plants to
choose from, VanDusen’s Plant
Sale lives up to its reputation of
providing an incredible variety of
plant stock, impossible to find in
one spot anywhere else in the
Lower Mainland. Plants from
VanDusen, friends’ gardens, and
others from commercial growers,
provide the wide varieties of
perennials, geraniums, rhododen-
drons, trees, vines, shrubs, cacti,
roses, fuchsias and orchids plant
sale buyers expect.

Gardeners can walk on the
‘‘wild side’’ in their own
backyards. The Native Plant cate-
gory has expanded its list of
plants to highlight for the coastal
gardener an abundance of in-
digenous and endangered species
now available. Buyers can help
preserve a species by purchasing
the endangered Erythronium
which grows in open shade and
thrives in woodsy soil

Trillium ovatum a delicate plant
will recapture memories of hikes
through our rainforests, For rocky
soils, and sunny, wind-swept loca-
tions, the Arbutus menziesii is
perfect. This tricky but rewarding
plant is ideal for ocean view pro-
perties and is successful in the city
as weil.

Great finds are always found in
Pot Luck. Here plants have been
lovingly donated by VanDusen,
gardens of our volunteers, friends
and neighbors. Often planis found
here are no longer available at any
commercial grower. Masses of
classic old time favorites such as
Phlox and iris, are bursting into
spring. Stately Solomon's seal,
and Japanese anemones will be
among the popular finds.

Following in the footsteps of
the great explorers the Rhododen-
dron Category will bring exotic
specimens collected from the four
corners of the world. Descendents
of the wild and uncultivated
plants found at the heights of the
Himalayan Mountains, steamy
depths of the Sumatran rain-
forests, wild fiords of our own
Pacific Northwest, and rugged
European Alps, have been careful-
ly propogated especially for this
sale,

For gardeners who crave exotica
the Orchids are a must. These
awe-inspiring plants have been
imported from as far away as
Thailand direct to VanDusen. To
delight the senses the ex-
quisite lavender of the Pleione is
just one of the semi-hardy orchids
that can be grown on the west
coast. This year orchid lovers will

Master gardeners will give expert
advice on home gardener’s prob-
lems. Children, watch out for free
entertainment.

Admission is free to Van-
Dusen's 55-acre garden, located at
Oak and 37th. Plants may be held
in the plant check area while
shoppers take time to stroll the
garden. All items must be picked
up by 3 p.m. Because only street
parking will be available on sale
day, a drive-through plant-pick-up
area is provided.
