November 2. 1990 - North Shore News ~ 29 AUTOMOTIVES Community spirit makes roads safer LAST MONDAY, Kamloops, Vernon, Kelowna and Pen- ticton conducted a unique experiment as part of the cur- rent ICBC intersection safety campaign. They challenged cach other to have an accident-free day, with the winner getting bragging rights in the Interior and the fosers hav- ing to pay up on some individual and community-wide wagers. For the records, Vernon won the challenge with only one prop- erty damage accident in the 24- hour period. Kamloops and Pen- ticton tied with three accidents each, while Kelowna had four. As a result, Vernon's flag will fly outside municipal halls in the other cities, and all other mayors and aldermen wil) be sporting their civic pins. BCAA staff will have to treat their Vernon col- leagues with cookies while ICBC’s Vernon Claim Office will reap a harvest of jelly beans from the other claims facilities. On average the four com- munities were running up 18 acci- dents per day just prior to Mon- day’s event. The day's total of U represented a 40 per cent reduc- tion in mishaps. The day succeeded thanks to the tremendous support of civic of- ficials, business leaders and the media, but nothing would have happened without the individual participation cf every driver. Therein, of course, lies the not- so-secret solution to our escalating accident rates — things will get better when we all decide to take individual responsibility to im- prove the situation. In the meantime, police forces across the province have been busy at problem intersections. On Monday, the Vancouver Police Derartment stated they had issued Ken Hardie INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AUTOTOPIC 1.116 teattic tickets during the first week of the campaign. Over half of them were for running yellow and red lights. North Vancouver RCMP report that stepped up enforcement has kept them ‘‘busy’’ over the past two weeks, and they will have statistics compiled early next week. With the change to standard time and the shorter days, our major afternoon commutes will take place in darkness for the next few months. Care and attention at intersections will be more impor- tant than ever if we want to pre- vent accidents. The Okanagan proved it can be done.
