_MAILBOX Collins praised for patriotism Open fetter to Matthew Stuart and Stewart Bell: RE: Your Sept. 7 letters about Doug Collins, the ‘dinosaur & redneck”’ (also known ta some as a bigot and racist): What vou two don't take into account in your assessment is the fact that Doug does get great support whenever he is before the public. Mast notably [PE comenber North Van MP Chuck Cooks’ immigration debate in 1988 in which Mr. Collins won by a large margin over the junior [nunigrsa- tion Minister Gerry Weiner. Doug was acclaimed by the Capilane-Howe Sound Reform Party Constituency Association to be their candidate to run in the fast. federal electian (had it nat been for Reformers’ leader Preston Manning turning his back on Doug at the last niinute, labell- ing him oa ‘racist.’ Mr. Collins would have fully participated in the democratic election process), Doug Collins is also a very well researched individual, especiatly on the immigration/multiculturah ism issue. for he has been writing about the topic in the News since 1984 and in 1979 wrote a hook, fmimiveration: Enelish Canada. Doug has said many dimes if he thought for more than a minute that Cane- dians wanted the kind of im- migration they're getting the) would shut up.” PE tike to call Doug Snatriotic. sitluting the Union Jack that fies in B.C. and several other pro- vinees. And have sou, Mr. Stuart and Mr. Bell, ever listened to the im- migration Association of Canada's Kim Abbott, or Pat Burns himself on his past local hot line shows? Most callers agree with Burns, Abbot and Collins, thar they are against the ‘melting pot’ concept, for they are, naturally, proud of Canada’s European heritage. Lastly, Eo note thar the two of- fictal languages of Canada are French and glish: not Punjabi or Cantonese, Scout Sutton North Vancouver Many thanks for support Dear Editor: The Districc of North Van- couver’s Taskforce on the En- vironment is on its final weeks of work and will be presenting its final report to North Vancouver District Council in the near future. J would like to publicly thank the many people who took the time to share their ideas and sug- gestions with Taskforce members on how to better protect the en- vironment in our community. [I would also like to publicly commend the Taskforce members and District staff for their dedica- tion and hard work over the past year, in particular Taskforce chairman Ald. Bill Rodgers. A special thanks should go to the many groups who worked with the Taskforce to launch the im- mensely successful Going Green On The North Shore initiative. Without your effort this popular initiative would never have become a reality. Special mention should go to the writers and staff of the North Shore News for the tremendous support and encouragemeni they have given the Going Green On The North shore initiative, in par- ticular by helping to distribute the calendars and by writing excellent articles on environmental protec- tion. 1 am confident that support for the Going Green On The North Shore initiative will continue to grow in the weeks and months ahead. If anyone has any last-minute suggestions before the Taskforce submits its report to North Van- couver District Council please feel free to call me at 987-6621. Patrick Bruskiewich North Vancouver Increase parkway speed Dear Editor: With the excellent enginecring job, visibility and access lanes, the speed limit on the Mount Seymour Parkway should now be increased to 70 km/h. It is obvious that the present 60 km/h is too slow as 99 out of 100 drivers exceed it and the comfortable (and safe) speed seems to be around 67 to 68 km/ h. If drivers use proper care and attention, there is no need for a traffic light at Berkley and cer- tainly not at Apex as there is not nearly sufficient traffic to warrant these unnecessary delays along the Parkway. In addition, the median should be extendeci east to Roche Point Drive along with the bicycle lane, with all parking renioved from the Parkway west of Roche Point Drive. Now, if the engineering department could anty get some- one to level the manhole covers... D.R.
