She picks up the phone, dials seven numbers and waits for the answering machine to beep. “Mae, it’s 2 o'clock,” she says sternly like a mother trying to get her child out of bed. “Where are yout” Minutes later a blond-headed woman armed with a dozen publicity kits breezes into Gangland Artists’ new Gastown office. She’s dressed in black and grinning from ear to ear. “Hi,” she says, extending an arm. “I'v Mae.” Mae Moore has been introduc- ing herself a lot these days. ft’s all part of the business of making a name for herself in the Vancouver music scene. This fall she'll be introducing herself right across Canada when she leaves on a cross-country tour to promote her debut recording, Oceanview Motel. Before she leaves, she’ perform ata PNE Ex- hibition Bow! concert with Spirit of the West on Aug. 28. It ali seems to be falling into place for Moore, who only a few years ago was playing the local coffee bars and clubs while holding down two or three day jobs just to survive. Today the new Moore is more self-assured, more confident. And the largely acoustic flavor of Oceanview Motel reflects that sentiment. Her music is more focused — bolder. “| know what i'm more com- fortable with now, "' says Moore, who is showing off the artsy-look- ing promotional package for Oceanview Motel. ‘} know who 1am now. I'm not bluffing myself thinking | can sing screeching rock and roll and get away with it.” Moore was born into a musical home in Brandon, Manitoba 34 years ago. She doesn’t say much about her mother, who died when she was 17. But her eyes light up when she speaks of her father, Dinty Moore, a jazz trumpeter who played big band. Dinty was the one who in- troduced her to music, but it wasn’t until she enrolled in visual art classes at Ontario's Algonquin College when she really discovered her love for it. “When | was at art school | decided there were too many vi- sual artists in the world and that it would be difficult making a living at it,” she says, breaking into laughter. Forging a career in music wasn't any easier. Musicians like Van Morrison, Neil Young and David Crosby — ‘tall my favorite vocalists are male” — influenced her own style, as did visual artists Christopher Pratt and Alex Col- ville, and writers Timothy Findlay, Steinbeck and Joyce. Even more than performing, songwriting has always been a passion for Moore, who recently moved to Vancouver's West End from Ambleside. “I've always been drawn to lyrics,” she says, “Tread tons. To feel at the end of writing a song (that) ve been able to convey my Message, Rives Me the most satisfaction,” Last June, Moore negotiated a music Career ry arc oe ee = photo submitted MAE MOORE ... introducing herself right across Canada. record contract with CBS Records after striking a publishing deal with the record label company. Buddy Barney Bentall, who produced Oceanview Motel along with guitarist Colin Nairne, took one of her demos back east and lobbied CBS on Moore's behalf. “Ereally applaud them for go- ing with me — [don’t fit into their normal slot,’’ she says smiling. Oceanview Motel is mainly about travelling, she says, either real or imaginary. , Red Clay Hills deals with en- vironmental concerns and Night Bird, she observes, is a metaphor for her career: It was one of those perfect summer nights/ t couldn't This summer, Chateau Whistler Resort sleep with the moon shining down...ft was then | heard some- thing familiar...1 opened up the door and looked around/ That's when | heard such a beautiful sound/ I started walking and didn't look back!
