VAN MAN CHARGED WITH CONSPIRACY TO TRAFFIC THE TRIAL of West Vancouver resident James Lloyd Hurford and five other men before a Vancouver county court judge and jury has been delayed until mid-September ~— almost three years after police arrested the accused near Port Hardy on charges of conspiracy to import and traffic marijuana. Members of the seven-woinan, five-man jury expressed concern over the autumn resumption because of work, school and trav- el obligations. But Judge Leggatt aliowed no pardons and reminded the jury members of their responsibility to the Crown and the justice system. He also cautioned them that they risk contempt of court charges should they discuss details of the trial with anyone during the three-month break. The court continued to hear submissions from Crown pro- secutors and defence counsel fast Wednesday. The trial began the last week of April and results from a_ six- month investigation in 1987 that ended Sept. 24 of that year when a group of men were caught off- loading «marijuana from a= ship near Rattenbury Island. Charged in connection with the ease are Frank Peter Bailey, Paul Richard Bragg, Christopher Kemp Angus, James Lloyd Hurford, Richard Hale Stewart and Christopher Speedie.
