Attempt to ban leaf blowers fails in West Van

in West Vancouver, despite the
protest of a neighborhood Right to
Quiet Society.

West Vancouver School Board
made the decision Monday after
receiving a letter from John Beltz,
who lives near Pauline Johnson
Elementary School, in which he
complained that a noisy leaf
blower had been operated on the
school grounds for two hours dur-
ing school time last November.

our collective perception and sensi-
tivity are so numbed by the noise
overload of today’s soundscape
that the gardening foreman can,
without any concern, inflict the
most irritating whine of this ineffi-
cient device on students and teach-
ers, or that the school authorities

Bob Young, the board’s director
of facilities, reported to the trust-
ees Monday that grounds crews use
the blowers only once in the sum-
mer and once in the autumn, and
on paved areas only, as grassed
areas are raked normally. He
pointed out that blowers clean up
the paved areas twice as fast as 2
person using a traditional broom.

Young added that Pauline
Johnson principal Florence Wilton
said that neither staff nor students
had complained about the
November incident.
