Team THE NORTH Shore-based Team B.C. soccer team just brought home the U.S.A. Denver Cup from a U.S. tour. This is the first time a Canadian team has won the 7-day tourna- ment, said team manager Janet Petersen. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter Also referred 1o as the under-20 All-Star team, Team B.C. over- came the loss of two _ injured players, stifling heat and a high altitude to triumph in this Olympic Developmental program cup. Team B.C. produced impressive scores to snag the cup, beating the Colorado Cherry Creek Selects 3- 1, Mexico’s ITAM team 4-1, and Mexico City 10-2. The latter game was intcrrupted at half-time by an electrical storm when the score was 8-0. Sonya Jeyaseelan reaches % finals NORTH VANCOUVER’s Sonya Jeyaseelan vaulted to the quarter- finals at the under-16 national tennis championships in Quebec City before bowing out to a French Canadian opponent. Jeyaseelan easily defeated Sharon Mieres of Toronto 6-1, 6-3, earning a berth in the quarter- finals. Bernard went on to win the championship in front of her home crowd. “She played well. She wanted to beat me because I always beat her in three sets. We’re pretty evenly matched,’’ Jeyaseelan said. “TY had the chance to win but [ played an out ball because | didn’t want to call it,”” she said, explain- ing the loss in the tie breaker. Jeyaseelan said that after three national championships and a three-week tour in Europe she was tired. “She was tired, no doubt about it. It was too much for a 13-year- old,’ Jeyaseelan’s father, Reggie said of her hectic schedule. The conditions were also not in Jeyaseelan’s favor. Jeyaseelan said her opponent had been practising in the windy, exposed courts for a long time prior to the tournament.
