DEVELOPMENT THREAT Preserve local parks Dear Editor: Recent development activity in the City and District of North Vancouver, as well as in other municipalities, has sparked a renewed interest in the need to preserve our natural setting — in particular, trees. The North Shore Citizens for Trees is but one of a number of organizations whose objective is to preserve wilderness stands. A long-simmering dispute over a piece of land in the city has left the Court House Area Residents Association with a fight on its hands. I am speaking of Block 220A, separated from Greenwood Park by the 24rd Street and Grand Boul- evard road. This piece of prime woodland property was pur- chased in 1921 by the City of North Vancouver ini- tially to be preserved as parkland. After narrowly be- ing defeated in terms of dedication, the land in ques- tion remains a prime site for developers. If Tempe Crescent is any indication of the trend of future development in this area then it must stop. Al- though Block 220A is not the only Jand to be regarded as having development potential, it is the starting point of a trend. Areas under special study under the Official Com- munity Plan could also be slated for the axe if united voices are not heard. It is one thing to support park preservation, quite another to get out aud do something about it. For further information conract me at 985-4958. Your franchise is a valuable instrument and aldermen should listen. Indeed this is what they are paid to do. Sidney A. Waite North Vancouver Save the Lawson house Dear Editor: I read with dismay the story abcut the Lawson house in Wes: Vancouver being sold to a devel- oper. And then I read on to find that there are discussions about moving it, and I really wonder how a stone house, in its original construction, can be dismantled and reconstructed in the same manner in another location, given the nature of stone and mortar. Realty Corporation not imagine that the house would ever be the same in character. In any case, West Vancouver is very quickly losing what little ar- chitectura! history it has to those all-powerful developers who seem to be controlling and shaping our urban sprawl with their all-power- ful money. How can you put a monetary value on such a house and property? Shame on you West Vancouver District Council for not having the foresight to preserve such a beautiful and histovical house for future generations. | am disgusted at the lack of care our elected of- ficials have for the quality of this growing municipality. Come on West Vancouver, if you can spend lots of monty to “quaintify’”> Marine Drive and enhance the north end of Lions Gate Bridge, surely you can spend a comparable amount of moncy to save the Lawson house.
