Choose vacuum with care

WHEN PURCHASING a vacuum
cleaner, you’re buying a household
appliance that will be used for a

shop and select a quality vacuum

There are basically three dif-
ferent types of vacuum cleaners:
Uprights and_ self-propelled
uprights (with a rotating brush
roll), canisters (with straight suc-
tion) end two-motor power teams
or power-head cleaners (combining
canister suction and a motorized
power head).

Which is best? It depends on
your home. If you have large areas
of wall-to-wall carpeting, an
upright is best suited to meet your
cleaning needs.

Self-propelled models make
vacuuming easier. Canister mocels
are designed to clean houses and
apartments with wood, linoleum or
tile floors and area rugs. They are

comparing different models.

Air-Flow System: If you’re buy-
ing an upright vacuum cleaner,
look for one with a direct air-flow
system as opposed to a canister
air-flow system. A direct system
cleans better by providing greater
air velocity 2nd suction than
canister system uprights.

Brush Rolf: A rotating brush roll
gives a thorough cleaning to all
carpets, especially thick-pile
carpeting. It brushes and vibrates
dirt out of carpeting, catching
buried particles that suction on
canisters can’t reach.

Centre Suction vs. Side Suction:
Check the location of the suction
source under upright vacuum
cleaners. Side suction cleans only
helf as well as centre suction
because it loses power on the side
opposite the suction source, leav-
ing dirt in the carpet.

Motor Amperage and Horse-
power; While amperage and
horsepower contribute to the per-
formance of a vacuum cleaner,
they're only two of the elements
that determine its effectiveness.
The total design, including the ef-
ficiency of its air-flow system,
determiues a vacuum’s effec-
tiveness.

While a powerful motor in-
creases suction, an inefficient air-
flow system reduces it. Conse

ineffective. This is especially true
of canister system uprights.

Assembly: Before purchasing an
upright, check to see if assembly is
required. While most are pre-
assembled, some models require
extensive, time-consuming
assembly.

Maintenance: There are only
two things you should need to do
to keep your vacuum cleaner in
running order — change the bag as
often as necessary and occasionally
change the belt. Be wary of
vacuum cleaners that require such
additional regular maintenance as
lubrication.

Ease of handling: Test drive the
vacuum cleaner to be sure it’s
lightweight, easy to use and easy to
control, especially if you’re pur-
