A practical rule of thumb is 99 m per tonne of heating capaci- ty. Groundwater-source heat pumps (also known as open-loop systems) extract heat from water in under- ground aquifers. The aquifer is tapped by driliing a well. A second well is used to return the water to the aquifer once it has passed through the system. Since open-loop systems merely remove heat from the aquifer water, they have no detrimental impact on the environment. This is assuming that the system is well designed (with proper return of the water to the aquifer) and that water movement and cooling does not seriqusly affect the water table. Before installing such a system, the groundwater source should be tested te ensure it does not contain corrosive pollutants or suspended solids, which can damage the system. The water should also be tested for hardness, acidity and iron content. This testing will be conducted by the contractor. You should also consult local environmental authorities to determine whether a licence is required for the installa- tion. A ground-source heat pump can reduce a home’s annual energy costs by up to 65 per cent. Howev- er, depending on the cir- cumstances, these systems may be more expensive to install than most other heating and cooling systems. On the other hand, they are seldom limited in terms of loca- tion, and work effectively even on small urban lots. Groundwater-source systems are generally not suitable in urban areas or where access to aquifers is limited or non-existent. If your home needs a new fur- nace and your are also considering central air conditioning, a heat pump may be a cost-effective solu- tion. If you decide to install an earth energy heat pump, remember that most homes should also have a supplementary heating systerr, usually electric duct heaters. Earth energy systems should be sized to meet the maximum cooling and hot water needs of a home rather than its peak heating re- quirements. During severe weather conditions, peak heating require- ments can be met by the sup- plementary system. Installation of an earth energy heat pump is not a job for do-it- yourselfers: all such systems should be designed, installed and serviced by an experienced con- tractor. ‘However, you can reduce the demands on the system by en- suring that your home is adequate- ly insulated, weatherstripped and caulked. Additional information on heat pumps is available from most local utilities.
