West Van gears up for Community Day COMMUNITY DAY seems to have been a tradition in West Van- couver since...well, it seems that it goes so far back that no‘one can tell us exactly when Community Day celebrations began here. Most educated guesses suggest the beginning was whenever there were people here to have a_ party celebrating May Day. There has always been the tradi- tional maypole dancing and dances imported from other parts of the country and the world, lots of music, games and fun. ‘It’s a celebration of spring, and of the joy of those blessed with liv- ing in this magnificent area sur- rounded by the beauty of verdant mountains, sparkling seas and a temperate climate, which generally keeps the snow high on the moun- tains for skiing and the grass green for golf. As the community grew, Com- munity Day became a celebration for local and surrounding residents. Parades, dances, floats, music, games, May Queens and at- tendants became the order of the day. Since the first May Queen was crowned in 1930, the queen has traditionally planted a tree in Ambleside Park. The fast May Queen was crown- ed in 1973, but the beautiful flowering trees are still enjoyed. This year’s parade will include about 22 of the ladies crowned through those years. There are 75 entries in this year’s parade, with six bands including the Fireman’s Band and the 1Sth Field Band. All the local schools will be repre- sented, some with as large a con- tingent as 300. There will be floats and antique autos among the entries under the direction of. parade marshal Emer- son Short. Children and _ their parents are invited to join the parade. At noon, there will be a fly-past by the Swiftbirds. A full day of entertainment and activities are scheduled for everyone in the family. A pancake breakfast including sausages and beverages will be served by the ° West Van Rotary Club at the N.W. corner of 18th and Marine from 9 a.m. untif noon.
