Light fixtures coordinated with the style of your house will not on- ly enhance its appearance but will provide light for safety and conve- nience. Most projects are easy to do yourself but require a knowledge of simple electrical wiring. Hire an electrician if you’re not familiar with the basic techniques. GENERAL GUIDELINES Select fixtures that “match the look of your house. For contem- porary homes, opaque, white glass or diffusing plastic fixtures work best. These obscure the bulb, reduce glare and soften the overall effect. For more traditional settings, choose clear glass lanterns with low-wattage decorative bulbs. Lanterns lose their charm if the exposed bulbs are too bright. Remember outdoor lights are exposed to the elements, so make sure all outlets and cables are waterproofed and underground systems covered with at least 12 inches of topsoil. To help keep home wiring safe, a quality ground fault circuit inter- tupter is a good idea — and one required by the National Electrical Code. ENTRANCE LIGHTING A single light source above the front door casts shadows: over visitors’ faces, making people more difficult to recognize. To direct light evenly, mount a pair of wail fixtures, one on either side of the door, 66 inches from the threshold. Vith modern fixtures, use dif- fusers at least six inches wide and $5-watt bulbs. With traditional lanterns, instal! recessed fixtures in the overhang to provide ‘‘sur- rounding” tight and allow the lanterns to glow softly to create atmosphere. For maximum flexibility, vary light intensity with a high/low light switch. Use the high option only when you are expecting visitors.
