B2 - Sunday, September 19, 1982 - North Shore News “AS THE CFL season moves into its second half, ‘the league offices are going to: have to devote considerably more time worrying:more about the USFL and less about what’s going on down on the field. The new league is more than just a flash in the pan as commissioner Jack Gadaur has intimated. Any league which has signed a lucrative television contract before they even have players, and which has set up a legalized gambling operation will not fail. There’s too much money at stake. Raiding and broken con- tracts are just an indicator of what's going to happen. When the crunch comes down, this new league could care less about what the CFL thinks. But what is more da- maging is what this could do next year and the year after. Recruiting for players is going to become very ex- pensive south of the border. With a greater demand for players, simple economics indicates that the price of such players will escalate. And when that happens, the same simple economics indicate just who will be the losers in the bidding war. With raiding and big dollars coming to the fore, perhaps it’s time the CFL started some long range planning. How about = spending considerable money and effort in Canada? How about setting up an_ effective development scheme north of the 49th parallel? Does it stil make sense for the Canadian League to con- tinue to send players south right into the bidding markets? Now could be the time to start turning the Canadian Football League into a Canadian League. Necessity could be the mother of invention. A _ stronger development with the main thrust in Canada, right down to the local levels such as our own G.S.L. There's no need to become a poor third rate NFL which will be the ultimate inevitability if things don’t alter. Perhaps the league offices could be so radical as to investigate the import rule in a couple of progtam. underway, with a view. as to putting more Canadians on the field. This is.not to take a rap at the U.S. players.By and large with few exceptions, they have fitted in well, and in fact, a great number of them have stayed on to give much needed expertise to the league. But shouldn't there come a time when some thought is given to making the league more Canadian in its entirety? If the move by Halifax to join the league goes through, couldn’t this be a trigger for perhaps accepting more Canadian cities? It seems that properly handled, the fans would accept a more Canadian league without too much struggle. Once upon a time it was, and perhaps now’s the time to consider returning in some form to those days. And if it did, then all the football teams in B.C. could start playing on Canadian fields with Canadian rules.
