Natural state preserved

Before we take a tour
of the famous Cabot
Trail, Cape Breton,
Nova Scotia, there are
some accomodation
services that you ought
to know about.

First of all, the Nova
Scotia Department of
Tourism has a_ toll-free
reservation number that we
can call for computerized
reservations for anywhere in
the province. In B.C., dial !-
112-800-565-7140. Albertans
use the same number,
omitting the “112”.

As I ‘mentioned before,
hotel operating can be a
losing proposition in Nova
Scotia due to the short
tourist season. Cape Breton,
especially, was considered a
bit light on tourist dc-
comodation so a govern-
ment-sponsored Bed and
Breakfast program was

restore electricity to the
Bahamas hit by a 6-day-long
series of power failures that
left residents foraging for
food and sparked a mass

exodus of nearly 10,000
grumbling tourists.

tions Tuesday, but long lines
of tourists fled aboard
crowded airliners in 90-
degree heat and Nassau’s
135,000 permanent residents
were forced to cope with
dwindling food and water

supplies.
“It was terrible, hot,
stuffy, unbearable,” griped

campgrounds and picnic

lot of boxed lunches. Tourist
facilities are sketchy —
many of the restaurants open
only for a short season (July

-and August). Others serve

only breakfast and dinner.
Keep your gas tank topped-

. up because it doesn't pay to

count On stations being open
when you need them.

It’s a shame to try to drive
the whole trail in one day —
there are lovely spots to stop
and explore such as_ the
replica of a crofter’s cabin
from the Isle of Skye called
“Lone Sheeling”.

On the docks, in little
places like Ingonish, you can
watch the fishermen
unloading cargoes of fish
and shellfish including
furious green lobsters. If
you're Camping or staying in

There are quite a number
of good motels in the
Ingonish area and it makes a
sensible overnight stop — a
little less than half-way
around the trail.

The famous Keltic Lodge
is here, open year round to
sccomodate both skiers and
summer visitors. The dining
room is only open during the
-ummer. Rates are fairly
expensive but include meals.
It's an experience to stay
there but you can have just
as much fun in some of the
cheaper motels especially if
you enjoy boiling-up your
wn lolsters!

If you do stay overnight in
Ingonish, plan to arrive in
Cheticamp the next day
about lunchtime.
