B3 - Sunday News, December 21, 1980 wR SS Sport SPORTS MAILBOX Dear Mr. Fraser, I was very interested in your article on coaching the coaches which appeared in Sidelines last Sunday and I would like to tell you how I feel about the situation. I am an engineering stu- dent at UBC and I work full- time to coach a baseball team (Cypress Park Little League, Major Div.) I first got into coaching because of a community recreation course I took in high school which required 25 hours of community ser- vice. I found coaching to be rewarding and I have been doing it since then. The background I have to draw on is seven years of playing experience (up through the Pony division where I played with the all- stars) with men I believe to have been excellent coaches. However, as I soon found out while coaching my first team, trying to coach skills from knowledge alone isn’t enough. I needed to know more about the psychology of my players in order to coach them effec- tively. Experience can give you some ability in this area, but I felt a training program for coaches would help greatly. Knowing there must be some program of this sort around, I contacted the Y and the recreation center. Since I was busy with school or work, I signed up for the weekend course. However, a couple of weeks after I had registered, I received a call telling me that the course wasecancell- ed due to lack of interest. I would still like to take a course in coaching because | want to help my kids pro- gress, but I think that if a program is set up, it should be voluntary. I know the problems our league had in getting coaches and if a man- datory program was in- troduced, I know some coaches wouldn't bother. | agree that the ideal would be for all coaches to be proper- ly trained, but I think that it’s even more important that the kids get a chance to play. I would hope that the rec centers or the Y could come up with a good program because it is not feasible for every league to set up their own clinics. I appreciate the views you express in Side- lines and I agree with most of them.
