For the last two Saturdays, teens and adults, agés 14 and over have been learning the basics of kayaking — how to get in and out of a kayak, how to paddle forwards and backwards and what to do when the kayak tips, to name a few of the skills involved. “We like to teach these skills in the pool first,” says Mike Aird, Aquatic Centre supervisor, “because it gives each person a chance to become more proficient and confident in water that is calm and familiar.” ‘Once the basics have been _mastered in the pool, the class then goes to a nearby river, usually to the mouth of the Capilano River, for further instruction in handling a kayak in small currents. This is the first time that ‘the West Vancouver Parks and Recreation Department has offered an indoor kayak course. Until now, it has been. a summer-only program, held at the Am- . bleside Pool. The next introductory course at the Aquatic Centre will be held Wednesday, November 28 and Friday, December 7. And, if there are enough requests, says Aird, “we will schedule advanced courses as well,” adding that, “this is the time of year when the rivers are filling up again, making conditions ideal for white water kayaking.” Why take up kayaking? As Aird explains it, “for ‘those who are looking for a challenge, paddling a kayak through fast-flowing water can be exciting. But for those who simply want to get away. from it all, kayaking can also be a- means to ‘exploring new areas.
