Starting this fall. the two North Shore Tory MPs will have to make way for a third North Shore resident in the House of Commons: North Vancouver's Katharine Parslow. The |7-year-old Handsworth Secon- dary school graduate has been selected to work as a page in the the House of Commons while she studies generat arts this fall at the University of Ottawa. Parstow was in Ottawa recently and spent a day observing the question period debate in the House of Commons. But what interested her more than the stimulating political banter was the ac- tivity of a handful of youthful-looking in- dividuals whe spent their time scurry- ing around the House passing notes from one pelitician to another. ““E wondered who these people were and what they were doing.” says Parslow. “I never knew these pages ex- isted.” When she returned to North Van- couver she found cut about the House of Commons page program and applied for it. And, admits Parslow, it wasn’t easy. She had to write an essay and a general knowledge exam in which she was tested on Canadian history and current events before being interviewed by a page selection committee. Shortly afterwards she received the good news that she had been selected as one of only 42 pages fiom across the country to work in the House of Cornmions. Parslow must spend 15 hours a week as a page and work four shifts a week, which translates into four days a week. “1 always like to see how government works and see how things influence other things. | can’t wait to get there.”’ she says. She admits her family and friends have mixed emotions about her trip to Ottawa. “My family thinks it is super, but a couple of people don’t «vant me to leave.” The House of Commons gig may come in handy in Parstow’s future. Career wise, she hopes either to /ae8 land a job with the federal govern- ment or move back to B.C.to become a French immersion teacher. ‘ But working as a page in g the House of Commons is not the only job Parslow will be doing while back east.
