New port Wagon niche-marketed to younger consumers From page 39 mounted, horizontally opposed boxer engine. ~ The 16-valve, single-overhead camshaft 1.8-litre four cylinder engine takes up less space vertical- ly because its cylinders lie flat (which is why this type of engine is also often called a flat four). Another benefit of this design is the quietness and smoothness. The excessive engine vibration com- mon in the four-cylinder engines is noticeably missing in the Im- preza; the pistons move in op- posite directions, essentially cancelling each other’s vibrating movement. The multi-port fuel-injected unit pumps out a reasonable 110-horsepower and 110 pounds-feet of torque, transfer- Ting them to the pavement through the front wheels or all four wheels. The Legacy-derived engine is refined and smooth but when pushing the extra-heavy all- wheel-drive station wagon models — as in the case of my tester — the pushing seemed slow. The same engine feels much peppier in the front-wheei-drive sedan versions, especially when - equipped with the five-speed manual transmission which by the way boasts Subaru’s one-and- only Hill Holder (prevents the car from rolling back on hills). The available automatic transmission is electronically controlled, allowing for rapid shifts through power mode, which engages autumatically on demand based on vehicle speed, gas pedal position and movement. - We could go on and talk about the Impreza’s four-wheel in- dependent suspension with tiq- uid-filied bushing, four-channel anti-lock brakes (on LS models only), speed-sensitive steering, user-friendly interior, and stand- ard CAA roadside assistance, but I want to go back to talk about one factor which differentiates Impreza from all other com- petitors: Subaru’s legendary all- wheel-drive system. The Impreza actually offers two types of full-time all-wheel-drive systems: a viscous couping unit for the five-speed models, and an active torque-split system for the shiftless models. The latter utilizes two speed- sensors to continuously monitor the wheel slope and traction con- ditions to automatically split the torque between the front and rear wheels as needed. You would never notice the ac- tual shifting of the torque in ei- ther of these proven AWD systems, Subaru offers the widest range of four-wheel-drive passenger cars, from their tiny Justy cars to the smooth, high-performance SVX coupes. The Impreza is avaiable with a front-wheel-drive or all-whcei- drive configuration in both the four-door sedan and four-door Sport Wagon models, The price ranges from $16,000. for a base all-wheel-drive Sport Wagon to over $22,000 for top- of-the-line LS models. If neither the extra space of- fered by the wagon versions nor the all-wheel-drive capability is a requirement to you, you can pick up a base front-wheel-drive four-door sedan for just $13,000 So if your lifestyle cries out for a practical car with lots of extra space and unbeatable all-wheel- drive traction, ali wrapped up in- side a cool, trendy look, then the Sport Wagon may be the next Yupmoblie for you.
