West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast MP John Reynolds, then house speaker during the Socred reign, was instru- mental in bringing together interested parties to revitalize the ailing site, albeit for three brief days a year. Reynolds joined a com- mittee headed by Vancouver multi-millionaire developer Jack Poole that included busi- nessman Bob Cadillac, repre- sentatives from Molsons and Championship Auto Racing Team (CART), all working to duplicate the race that was being run in Toronto. Reynolds had to step down from the position when he became minister of the environment in 1991, but was there to say “gentlemen start your engines” for the inaugural 1990 race. Now the Molson Indy Vancouver has generated more than $200 million in economic benefits to the Lower Mainland since the race’s inception in 1990. The race this year is expected to pump $25 million into fancouver’s economy. According to Reynolds, concerns about noise and traffic disruption by down- town residents and workers dissipated after the first race. With a purse of $20 mil- lion US being up for grabs between 30 drivers, the Vancouver Indy is a fixture on the CART circuit. It attracted 165,360 people over the three day event last year. The race has become both ‘a social and sporting event with corporate VIP booths, and yes, Reynolds will be at the race indulging his thrill for speed.
