The Itosukai Club is a branch of the club of the same name in Vancouver. Instructors in North Van- couver are Philip Darbyshire (black belt achieved im Tokyo) and David Friske, who has been a member of the North Vancouver club for more than five years. The goal of the club, says Darbyshire, is good karate technique and superb physical training. New students are taken aside by a senior belt im the early days for individual at- tention regarding club rules and basics. Flexibility, endurance, coordination, tone, good reflexes, control of technique, and strength are quickly attained with regular attendance of the two hour three night a week sessions, says Darbyshire. The club has produced its share of good karate practi- tioners. Twenty-five club members have qualified for the B.C. Winter Games next month, while in November, 1981, Dennis Dezeil of the Van- couver branch and Dar- byshire placed ffirst and fourth respectively in the mens black belt competition at the Western Canadian Championships. Alex Palmer of the North Van- couver branch took first place in the brown belt category and the B.C. team as a whole, including Dezeil and Darbyshire, won the gold medal. The club is a member of the National Karate Associa- tion of Canada and three tournaments each year pro- vide excellent training goals and competition for all members. of members range from 13 to 40.
