2 - Sunday, January 4. 1998 - North Shore News Community Policing And You ‘Two crimirals are behind bars again thanks to the good work of neighbours helping acighbours, and the Police. On November 27th at about 9:50 pm. a resident of West 15th observes? a male sneaking around in’ the dark in his neighh.vurs yard. He went out and contrunted the suspect. The home owner. seeing what was going on, call Police. As they waited they saw the sccond suspect come from the front lawn of another house. He tried to make up a story about what they were doing there, it did not wash with our alert residents, who made them stay until Police arrived. Upon arrival the Officers found out who these boys were. William and Robert Menzies, ages 48 and 40 years. The Menzies are well known to Police in B.C. and Alberta. William was wanted on several warrants thru out the Lower Mainland and Alberta. Both have been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada for Trespass by night and Roberr was in possession of house breaking instruments. At Hg ” BLOCK WATCH HELPS... For those of you that are not yet part of the BLOCK WATCH PROGRAM, here is an example of how one block works for each other. Back on October 27th there was a home broken into in the 4700 block of Hoskins. This is a complex of seventy-five units. The victim of the B&E, after calling the Police, notifies his Block Watch Caprain. The Captain, in this case, made up flyers and distributed them to all the units. The flyer contains the information about the B&E and reminds people of the precautions to be taken co prevent further incidents. We are not saying thar Block Watch prevents all B&E’s but it has been proven that it cuts them down. When people watch out for each other and look after each others homes it helps make yourneighbourhood safer. Cst. Tom Seantan Questions? A favourite spot for these thefts is at super markets. Some women still leave their purses unattended in the shopping buggy. Criminals watch for just this sort of thing. They sometimes work in paris, one to distract the purse owner and one to take it. Keep your purse secure, hold onto it. Another area for purse thefts is the work place. Keep your purse locked up at work. If you work in a business the public has access to keep an eye on who is coming and going. If they do not belong, ask them what they want. Call Police if it is suspicious. = TRAFFIC TIP Lots of people are still riding their bikes either for fun or for work. We have had a couple of serious incidents lately where cyclists have been hurt. The RCMP Bike Section wants to remind those people using their bikes, at this time of year, that they must use extra caution. It is often raining and gets dark much earlier, you are very hard to see. Your bike must have lights and you must wear a helmut. Wear good reflective clothing and watch for black ice. If you are crossing a busy intersection, use the cross walk but walk your bike. Our own Cot. Karen Mang says, “driving is such a huge part ot our job ay officers on the road we take it for granted, but on a busy shift we could drive well over a hundred kdometers, You are stopping and starting. pulling other cars over, listening to the Police radio. watching traffic and sometimes having to exceed the speed limir to so toa call. Considering the number of hours we spend in a Police car and the number of people that die in trattic accidents each year, it is probably one of the more dangerous parts of our job.” Constable Karen Mang poses with ICBC's Gail Weimer Part of Karen's duties include working out of the ICBC North East claims centre. She, like many officers, investigar:s hit and run claims, Karen says there are some people who iry and make false hit and run claims costing us all thousands upon thousands of dollars. When Karen isn't investigating hit and run claims or driving through the streets of North Vancouver, she's playing music and singing professionally. Originally from Melville, Saskatchewan, this talented Officer says the love of her life is her dog “Lady”, a Cocker Spanicl/Poodle cross. Ac this time of year and everyday throughout the year, Constable - Mang reminds us to “slow down, get home safely and happy holidays”. Feature Volunteer...
