we lose our neurosurgeons, we'll never get them back. Why they
have to chosen to ignore something tke this, I don't know. |

“Lions Gate has the longest surgical waitlist of any hospital in
the Lower Mainland. But it’s the only hospital on the North
Shore, and people prefer to have surgery close to home.”

“There are significant ramifications for patients bypassing
Lions Gate,” says Termansen, citing the recent case of a hang-
glider injured at Whistler who suffered additional brain damage
when he was re-routed to Vancouver General Hospital.

“It’s crucial that patients (with serious head injuries) are trans-

rted to the closest hospital. The more rapid intervention can

“I'm disappointed by the overall budget picture and confused
by the rationale behind their funding formula.”

“No amount of money can help the collapsing health system,”
says Dr. Brian Hunt, head of neurosurgery at Lions Gate. “There
is a profound shortage of nurses in the OR The little bit of
moncy thrown to nursing won't help. The union mentality is that
ail nurses are equal and should be paid equal — it’s not true.

“People are getting all excited about little crumbs. This is a
