RESULTS ARE in from the
14th annual Okanagan Wine
Festival held the first week of
October.

Never mind the “Winentasters” *
and “Judges” awards (what do they
know’? they're only experts). the
competition on which winemakers
will be keying future plans is the
“Consumer's Choice Awards.”
which reflects what the Wine Goof
wandering in the LDB aisles is
looking for in the way of seriaus
local grape juice.

in that all-important category.
veteran Sumac Ridge winery and
relative newcomer Jackson-Triggs

dominated, with Sumac Ridge’s
1998 Private Reserve
Gewurairaminer taking a first for
white wine, followed by Jackson-
Triggs 1993 Pinot Blanc. Both inci-
dentally picked up silver medals i
the Judges Awards. Another
Gewurztraminer, Quail’s Gate
1993, showed in third place.

The winning ghiss was im the
other hand for the reds: Jackson-
Triges 1993 Merlot was the
favorite frontamong 1.500 ballots,
with Sumae Ridge’s [991
Chancellor breathing on its neck
and Lang Vineyards 1993 Pinot
Noir playing catch-up.

The Winenristers picked
Domaine de Chaberton’s 1993
Optima dessert wine overall in the
whites (the judges gave ita
bronze). and split the decision for
second between Gray Monk's 1903
Gewuratraminer Bodersen
Vineyards and Le Comte’s 1993
Ehrenfelser. Judges pave the Gri
Monk a silver.

The Winemasters evidently like
merlot as much as the consumers,
but they preferred Calona
Vineyards 1992 Reserve Merlot
(the judges gave it a silver), fol-
lowed by Cedar Creek's 1993 Pinot
Noir and Le Comte’s 1992 Gamay
Beaujolais.

The judges conferred the gald

on only avo whites: Blue Mouniiin
1993 Pinot Gris and Cedar Creek
$993 Select Late Harvest Botrytis
Optima. Whites dominated the sil-
ver with only the Calon and
Sumac Ridge Merlots making the
cut for red ithe company of nine
whites.
