Members of the Motorsport Emergency Turnworkers Assn. are trained to respond quickly and effectively. People behind the scenes often make or break race THERE IS no denying it: racing is expensive, time consuming and potentially dangerous. By Marc Rovner Contributing Writer If you love the excitement but don’t actually want to race, you could join one of the 90 members of the Motorsport Emergency Turmworkers: Association (META) and become a track worker. A Vancouver-based non-profit . group, META provides everything from timing and scoring to emer- gency yesponse personnel. Racing events could not safely be held with- out the dedication of META and groups like them around the world. META is recognized throughout Canada and the United States for its high degree of professionalism. Members work at various amateur and professional races including many of the indy Car events. Training sessions for novices and veterans are held throughout the year. “The only requirements for involvement are: You must be over 18, be in good health and be able to work well in a team environment,” says president Ann Peters. “There are so many different types of jobs that there is nearly always a job to match peoples’ individual interests.” After the closing of the Westwood Race Track in 1990, local track workers were forced to travel south to Seattle, Portland and farther to satiate their appetite for speed. Earlier this year a road racing facility in Mission was opened. “We are always looking for new people and it will be much better to be able to pro- vide training locally,”said Peters. The work has been referred to as “long periods of boredom punctuated by momenis of terror.” Working on the turns is the most exciting thing at a race track next to racing.
