26 — Wednesday, December 2, 1992 - North Shore News id Soulless sweets Deep disco from the syrupy *70s ISCO DAWNS again; Stone Roses singles picked; john Cale shows his spooky side. Various Artists — Disco Classics Vol. 1}, BMG Music 1992 Dust off the platform shoes and glitter-Dalls, the polyster powers at be are attempting to revive disco. There is much of this music in the vaults of jabels such as BMG. The boogie cogie-genie is being pumped from the bottle in measured, orgasmic doses. Blame it on the voracious samp!- ing habits of the new kids on the dance-music scene. Blame it on the nasty habit aging boomers have of exhuming social trends best left in the compost heap. Blame it on those who wore Disco Sucks! T-shirts: for bad is ultimate'y good when staking out generational turf. Disco Classics Vol. 1 resurrects the likes of Village Peopie, Inc. Chic, Barry White and cen udja Barry. Apparently 18- to 25-year-olds are eating this up, hence volume wo. In hindsight the earthy funk of some of the tracks does stand the test of time. Kitsch-culture can be fun, but the bulk of the cuts show themselves for what they always will be, soulless sweets for the programmed masses. The Stone Roses — Turn To Stone — Silvertone Records 1992 _ Fervent fans of this U.K. outfit should be happy that these erstwhile import-only tracks were picked for this fluorescent bouquet Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW of singles. Like many of the current crop of progressive bands to surface from Manchester, The Stone Roses’ stock-in-irade is grounded in a synthesis of fey psychedelia and a detached, unhurried spin on hip- hop as expressed within the acid house movement. Some cf the nascent stuff repre- sented here teeters on the edge of foppish irrelevance. The extended-jam tracks, the ones where the band locks on a groove and rides it like a Hendrix- ian monster, reveal the appeal. John Cale — Fragments o Rainy Season, Hannibal Records 1992 The defining tone of Fragments ofa Rainy Season i is sombre and elegiac. It’s a simply presented live set featuring an uneasy man, an abused piano and a spooked in- tensity. A packet of well-chosen songs fuels the fire. Cale casts his spell with the help of Dylan Thomas, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, Lie Still Sleep Becalmed, and On A Wedding Anniversary: Brian Eno, Cordeba: Elvis Presley, Heartbreak Hotel, and Leonard Cohen, Hallelujah.
