Not only would she often skate three shows Saturday and two Sunday, but the gruelling schedule also required an endless round of publicity appearances. Receptions and cocktail parties often kept her up till 4 a.m. while national TV shows often required her presence at 7 a.m. And there was the tedious business of living out of a suitcase 10 months of the year, the interminable hotels, restaurants, planes and trains. “The glamor was on the ice for two and a half hours only,” says Karen. “You're torn inside out and still they want more from you. You earn every penny.” Teaching is much more relaxed -- but Karen says she has to guard against getting too emotionally involved with her students. “You have to separate yourself; you're close, but not too close.” Karen says that if she’s too involved it can be “quite heartbreaking” if a student switches teachers or quits skating. “But if there's a certain bond, you can reach down and get more out of that person.” She doesn't skate a lot herself any more. “I find I don't have to. Even after four or five months of just teaching and not skating myself, I feel like I’ve never been off. Maybe it’s just become second nature.” She says she enjoys golf and skiing when there's snow — and walking her 102- pound German Shepherd, Trino. “He gives me lots of exercise!” She also has a little Pekingese poodle called Penny who “beats up on the big dog... we have a busy house.” Karen says she enjoys living in Boston and visiting NorWes Caps up against the Clippers Biggest game of year NorWes Caps are betting that the worst of the season is behind them when they take to the ice tonight (Sunday) against the league leading Nanaimo Clippers at the North Van Rec Centre at 7.30 p.m. Coming off a= morale boosting 9-4 win over the Chilliwack Colts last week.
