20 - Sunday, June 7, 1992 - North Shore News Seniors’ own lottery is S THERE ARE some bad odors wafting around us current- ly, damaging our respect for certain of the organizations purportedly bent on championing us citizens. They have represented themselves as devoted to the public good, but have seriously shaken that percepiion by paying huge unseernly salaries to their administrators. Others have come up muddied when questionable contributions to unrelated business expenses have been revealed. Makes you mad. But it gives me a great opening to reassure you 2bout our own Seniors Lottery. I say ‘tour own,”’ because its every raised dime is spent on behalf of us seniors, al- -though anyone can buy a ticket, even beardless youth. It’s 11 years old and it’s Simon pure. There is a small paid staff of adders and allotters, but the board of directors is made up of volunteers, and it has no revenue other than the sale of its own lot- tery tickets. I’ve been buying them for years, partly because they com< most conveniently through the maii, partly because I, like you, love the idea of a shower of gold from the skies, unaccompanied by MONDAY Sune 8--Free. Actually, I don’t really want an abundance falling on me. I’m one of those who thinks $10 million for a weekly win is too much — I'd far rather see a dozen people receiving a comfortable sum than one person with an overflowing lapful. It’s asking for an awful fot of good sense and sturdy principles to handie all that sudden dough, and one’s life could get badly skewed by such an overdose of cash. The Seniors Lottery won’t cor- rupt anyone. What they call the top, the grand prize, is just $50,000, but it would surely re- shingle the roof or replace the ag- ing Essex or get you to Acapulco if that's the way your hankers are pointing. All the lesser prizes, second and third of $10,000 and $5,000, and a whole bunch of $500 and $100 bills, would give that littie “‘frisson”’ that accompanies even a pigmy-sized boon. The game began in 1981, and is properly anointed under the Society Act of B.C. as a non- profit organization licensed to be in the lottery business.” Their stated credo is Helping Seniors Help Themselves, and they have, in their 1! active years, helped North Shore seniors to the tune of eighty-odd thousand dollars. Not bad. You'll be surprised at the list, and it may give you some ideas for the activities of your own worthy group. For instance: @ $2,500 was given to the Medi-. cal Research Foundation at Lions Gate Hespital for study of seniors’ frailties; @ The North Shore Volunteers for Care Residents received $3,500 to help provide material for their programs; @ The Get Up and Go Club in West Vancouver received $10,000 for the new activity centre in Kiwanis Lodge; @ 35,000 helped the North Shore Horseshoe Club fence its new pitch; @ West Van Lawn Bowling Club received $6,300 for the restoration of two bowiing greens for their seniors; @ The Senior Men’s Association at the North Shore Winter Club ON FOR SENIORS | Silver Harbour Centre, 144 E. 22nd St., N.V. There is no funding, provided for salaries or operating expenses — the money granted must be administered by local boards of 10 persons, seven of whom must be seniors. And that it must be non-profit goes without saying. Seniors’ hang-outs have tickets, as does the Bank of B.C., or you can telephone to put yourself on the mailing list — 685-4533.
