PARENTS ACCOMPANIED by their children across
the U.S. border will routinely have to produce ifems
such as birth certificates and custody papers under a
new customs and immigration initiative to prevent
cross-border abductions. Suspicious customs officials
have requesied such documentation in the past, but the

new initiative means that customs officials will ask for
children’s identification as part of their initial question-
ing. The move has been hailed by groups working to
find missing children. But it may also cause forgetful
parents unpleasant customs experiences at the U.S.
border.
