Ear diseases are one of the most common pet problems & MOST VETERINARIANS would agree that ear diseases are one of the most common problems seen in practice. Inflammation of the external ear canal can be seen in dogs and cats of all ages. Certain dog breeds are predisposed to ear problems due to pendulous ear flaps, hair in the ears or wax buildup. These condi- tions reduce air circulation and encourage bacterial and yeast growth. Animals seen with skin prob- lems associated with allergies, immune diseases and hormonal imbalances may have concurrent ear problems as well. Your animal should be exam- ined if you see any of the follow- ing symptoms: scratching, ear twitching, head shaking, head tilt, pain, odor, discharge, redness, or swelling. The most frequently diagnosed problems follow: THINGS ARE GOING CHEEP! ‘ALL BIRDS IN STOCK 25 25% ALL BIRD CAGES, 3 OFFINSTOCK # * CHECK OUT OUR NEW REPTILE SECTION Pet Habitat 1 Lynn VALley CenTREe 986-4812 SALE - FEB. 23-MAR. 2 SUPPLIERS OF foe HAGE, QUALITY PET PRODUCTS Ear mites: Ear mites are seen in both cats and dogs, but are the most com- mon ear problem in cats. This mi- croscopic parasite causes intense irritation characterized by thick, brown crusts in the ears. Mites are usually restricted to the external ear canal but may be found on other areas of the body. Treatment involves a thorough cleaning of the ear canals followed by application of an appropriate parasiticide. The source of mite infestation (another animal) must be determined to prevent reinfestation. Bacterial and yeast infections: ‘This is the ear problem most often seen in dogs. As previously mentioned certain breeds have a higher incidence such as the Cocker Spaniel, Poodles, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Sharpeis. A thorough ear examination by your veterinarian using an otoscope is necessary to determine if a foreign body is present in the ear canal and to decide if cleaning and hair removal is necessary. Most animals respond well to treatment with ear medication that - typically contains an antibacterial, Ask a Veterinarian DR. TERRI OR. ELIZABETH CLEMETT RICHARDS antifungal and an anti-inflam- matory. In resistant or recurrent condi- tions your veterinarian may recommend a culture and sensitiv- ity test. A bacterial culture is a laboratory diagnostic test. A sample of the discharge is taken from the ear canal using a sterile cotton swab. This is sub- mitted to the laboratory . which then puts the sample on to a culture media plate and into an incubater.
