Ghost iover Truly, Madly, Deeply has masterly touch Truly, Madly, Deeply **** (Samuel Goldwyn Co.) Rated Mature (at the Royal Centre and Park Cinemas) ead men, it seems, travel in packs and watch videos. Nina (luliet Stevenson) should know. Her dead lover, Jamie (Alan Rickman) has come back. His recent death sent her into an agonizing period of bereave- ment, complicated by her flat’s dismal surroundings — rats, brown water, cabinet doors that wan't close. They had missed each other so ferociously (or maybe because he © im didn’t die right}, that his spirit is inhabiting her life. At first, she is overjoyed. Orice again, they share a bed, some duets (he was/is a cellist, she a pianist), and conver- sation. Then all the extra baggage shows up. Like his rearranging the furniture or fiddling with the heat until her apartment becomes a ‘blast furnace because he’s eternal- ly cold. Now Jamie has taken the liberty of inviting a few of the guys over to watch videos — all night, every night. When she comes home to find her small living room packed with spectres for a chamber recital, Nina thinks that maybe the rela- tionship wasn’t as perfect as she thought. * When a new boyfriend (a live one) shows up, she’s torn not just between two fovers, but two worlds, the past and the present. Now if the above sounds dead serious, it’s not. The pain of losing a partner is never mocked, but the men in Nina’s life are frequently played for laughs. Her boss (weli played by Bill Paterson), her lovestruck landlord, her offbeat new love interest and Rickman’s petulant ghost lover are all given depth and levity. " Director/writer Anthony Minghella embellishes each scene with a master’s touch for whimsy, charm and heartbreaking sadness. NORTH VAN. + RICHMOND Tim Bell FILM REVIEW While the story is very simple, the emotions are refreshingly complex and honest. Although the theme has a nod- ding resemblance to Ghest, the - trite dialogue, superficial special effects and standard murder plot of that Hollywood contrivance have been replaced with in- telligent, poignant performances by Rickman and Stevenson. Like all good things, this film is a buried treasure. (Buried in the depths of the Royal Centre to be BILTON’S precise.) But discovering it is one of the year’s best rewards. Robin and Marian *** (RCA/ Columbia Home Video/Pioneer Laserdisc) Rated Mature Robin Hood over the hill in Sherwood Forest? Richard Lester’s 1975 version of a middle-aged Robin Hood has a similar mood to last summer's Prince of Thieves. Although Kevin Costner has more hair, Sean Con- nery has the vigor and panache. After crusading with their king for 20 years, Robin and Little john leave the blood-drenched Holy Land. The Greenwood has chang- ed. Marian (Audrey Hepburn) is a nun, Robin's band are unmerry, and the Sherriff of Nottingham (Robert Shaw) has mellowed con- siderably, but still poses a threat. The bittersweet romance of the story, well-played on an adult level, is genuinely touching, and the roles are three dimensional. Richard Harris makes a memo- rable, if brief, King Richard, a thoroughly nasty mass-murderer, slaughtering in the name of Chris- tianity. But just to remind us that this is basically an adventure story, there’s an abundance of swashbuckling and daring escapes.
