Federation establishes new school THE FEDERATION of Mountain Clubs of B.C. (FMCBC) has an- nounced the establishment of Canada West Mountain Schooi (CWMS). The federation’s instructional programs have expanded dramatically over the past 10 years. From only five classes in 1982, the FMCBC has expanded to the point of offering more than 110 courses this winter and sum- mer. This growth has necessitated the creation of CWMS as a division of the federation. “Our course programs have, through the commitment of com- mittee volunteers, instructors, staff and students, evolved into a mountain school that provides top quality professional instruction and education in mountain safety skills’ said Brian Jones, manager of the instructional programs of CWMS. i CWMS's goal is to prepare individuals to be self-sufficient in the outdoors by teaching them the basic skills required for safe year round hiking, climbing, and back-country travel. Canada West Mountain School and the FMCBC promote non- mechanized recreation and _ all couzses are held in areas that are accessible via foot, ski or snowshoe. “For the winter season some of the most popular courses are In- truction to Avalanche Safety, Backcountry Ski Touring, Snow Camping and Winter Survival and our extended Ski Touring pro- grams.”’ said Jones.
