Trudeau offers
fo retire

OTTAWA (UPC) - Prime
Minister Pierre Trudeau
said Monday he would
retire from politics if he
and the 10 provincial
premiers reached an
agreement on a new
Canadian constitution at
next September’s first
minister's conference.

“If we do reach
agreement on all these
things, I would be very,
very anxious to retire
soon,” said Trudedu,
when asked of his own
future. “That might be an
incentive to a lot of
people, I'd say.”

During the conference

at Trudeau’s 24 Sussex
Drive residence, the
prime nmiinister and the
premiers agreed to meet
again September 4-8 after
Officials from all 11
governments met over
the summer to work out
details for a new con-
stitution.

Asked what would
happen if the leaders
failed to reach agreement
on the substantive areas
of reform, Trudeau made
it clear he would act
unilaterally to bring
about constitutional
change — especially im
terms of linguistic rights.

arrangement, automatically
both respond to school
alarms, regardless of which
North Van municipality the
school is in - have been
plagued by false alarm calls.

The situation became so
acute a few months ago that
District Fire Chief Bob
MacDonald threatened to
limit his department's
response to schools which
have consistently bad
records for false alarms.

Many of the calls were
found to be due to over-
sensiive equipment and
wrinkles in the alarm
systems. The school board
began treating repair to the
troublesome systems as a

pronty to avoid the fire
departments having to
retum to certain schools

repeatedly because of the
same fault.

But the departments found
themselves continuing § to
give pnmority response to
alarms sounded at schools
needlessly by accident and
by student pranksters.
