Collins says.

Collins visits or phones Bonsen
every week. After finishing a
100-mile race in August, Collins
called Bonson to tell him, “We did
it.””

Last month Collins got Bonson
out of intensive care for the first
time in six months to watch the
Vancouver International
Cyruthon. ‘‘It really made his
day.”

Collins, whose dedication to the
program and Bonson is obvious,
says ‘Sometimes I think the
athletes get more out of it than the
kids.”

There are four men and one
woman involved in the Vancouver
program. Collins wants to see
more female athletes in it and
would also like to extend the pro-
gram beyond the Lower Mainland
to establish a network of athletes.

The athletes don’t have to be
ribbon winners, Collins says. ‘SAH
we ask of the athletes is a com-
mitment of one or two hours a
week ~- and that they want to be
able to give of themselves.”’
